The Big Red Barn Retreat Receives $175,000 Gift from Unum Group

Columbia, SC (December 5, 2023) - The Big Red Barn Retreat will use a $175,000 gift from Unum Group in celebration of the company’s 175th anniversary to help Veterans, Active Duty and First Responders learn to thrive in the aftermath of trauma, through programs like Warrior PATHH and Struggle Well. Through this gift, Unum Group is highlighting the impact of the Big Red Barn Retreat’s innovative and action-oriented integrated practices, training and programs for veterans, active-duty service members and first responders. This gift also underscores Unum Group’s commitment to a caring spirit and helping communities thrive through life’s challenging moments.
“We are honored to be chosen as one of Unum’s 175th commemorative gift recipients,” said Marty Martinez, Executive Director of Big Red Barn Retreat. “This gift will help The Big Red Barn Retreat continue to provide the gift of Post Traumatic Growth at no cost to our Veterans and First Responders.”
The funding provided in this commemorative gift will allow the Big Red Barn retreat to increase the reach of Struggle Well to first responders throughout the Carolinas. It’s estimated that 30-40% of our nation's first responders are struggling with significant mental health challenges. Participants in the Struggle Well Training programs have seen a 56% increase in deeper relationships, a 34% growth in appreciation for life, and a 48% increase in new possibilities. For every healthy first responder, hundreds of people are impacted.
Struggle Well training approach reawakens a sense of hope and possibility in participants and provides them with a path to a life worth living — one filled with passion, purpose, service, connection, and growth.
In addition, the BRBR is grateful to Colonial Life for providing continued funding for our Farm to Table program. This wellness practice helps our Heroes build connections and relationships through the preparation of healthy food. Another way Colonial Life makes an impact at the Big Red Barn Retreat is by coming out to volunteer on a regular basis.

“We recognize the vital roles that veterans, those who actively serve, and first responders play in our communities,” said Tim Arnold, Colonial Life president and CEO. “This contribution reflects our gratitude, and our commitment to supporting those who are dedicated to protecting our safety and well-being.”
Throughout the company’s 175th anniversary year, Unum Group is celebrating the critical role organizations, like the Big Red Barn Retreat, play in the community by complementing grants with 175 volunteer and giving opportunities.
