Unum Group’s commitment to prioritizing mental health creates an environment that fosters a sense of wellness, and ensuring we support our employees and customers when they need it most extends to the communities where we live and work.

Supporting organizations that impact the health and well-being of those around us is important, and we are proud of our partnership with The Big Red Barn Retreat, which aligns to Unum Group’s Healthier Communities focus area.

The Columbia-based non-profit serves veterans, active-duty service members and first responders with a place to gather and connect and receive access to health resources at no charge.

“Our focus is mental wellness and post traumatic growth, which helps our clients remember and address what happened to grow from it,” said Marty Martinez. “We don’t compare trauma, rather we talk about the impacts our trauma has on us, allowing us to find common ground.”

With more than 2,500 individuals utilizing their services, which are provided through grants and private donations, Unum Group’s support highlights the impact of their innovative and action-oriented integrated practices, training, and programs and their overall mission to support those who have experienced trauma.

“May and June represent opportunities to reflect on the importance of mental health with May being recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month in the U.S. and June being recognized as PTSD month. I’m proud to work for a company that prioritizes mental health in the workplace and takes action to support the mental health of the people in the communities where we live and work.”

- Tim Arnold, CEO and President of Colonial Life

Memorial Day is also recognized in May, and Unum Group has supported Wreaths Across America (WAA) whose mission is to Remember, Honor and Teach. The organization is committed to teaching younger generations about the value of freedom and the importance of honoring those who sacrificed to protect those freedoms.

In 2023, Unum Group was presented with the Founders Award, which is presented to an individual or group who exemplifies the mission to Remember, Honor, and Teach, and shows active support of our nation’s military and veterans. While the next National Wreaths Across America Day is not until December, you can learn more about WAA and how to volunteer or donate to support and honor our U.S. veterans.
