2013 Corporate Responsibility
Saving energy and reducing carbon emissions constitute our single biggest opportunity to reduce our environmental impact.
Every year, we invest in upgrades and improvements designed to improve energy savings. From reducing night-time winter temperature settings on automatic thermostats in our Portland office, to replacing lights at our Columbia facility with high-efficiency LED lamps, to installing motion-sensor lighting in our U.K. buildings, we know every kilowatt hour we save adds up to a big difference.
Because communications and travel also play a role in our energy consumption, each of our major facilities includes meeting technology and state-of-the-art meeting rooms with live video and audio links to enhance productivity and reduce the energy and carbon impacts of travel between our locations.
Each year, we participate as a reporting member of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), an international, not-for-profit organization that provides a global system for companies to measure, manage and share vital information about their carbon footprint.
Unum UK is also registered with the U.K. government under the U.K. Carbon Reduction Commitment scheme (CRC). Designed to improve energy efficiency and cut emissions in large public and private sector organizations, the CRC requires participants to monitor their energy use and report their energy supplies annually.
