Actuarial Development Program

The Actuarial Development Program has a 40 year tradition at Unum. The program allows candidates to work in various rotational work assignments and locations across the enterprise, network across the business and receive regular mentorship by current actuarial leaders. The program not only provides comprehensive exam support but also application of key actuarial skills and concepts in all areas of a growing global business. Through development sessions, mentorship, and functional rotations, ADP Associates complete the program ready for success as an Actuary.

The life of an actuarial program participant


One of the most exciting aspects of this program is that ADP associates participate in various rotational work assignments, giving the ADP participant the flexibility to pursue his or her own interests and strengths.

Current available ADP work assignments and roles

  • Experience Analysis: Includes analysis of historical results and partnering with other areas to do analysis of assumptions for Pricing, Valuation Bases, or Benefits.
  • Benefits — Operational Metrics & Reporting: Allows actuarial students to understand how business processes and changes can influence both operational and financial metrics.
  • Asset Liability Management: Provides a corporate view of the enterprise and allows the student to gain exposure to our Investment department as well as a wide variety of product lines.
  • Pricing: Includes being involved in the design and pricing of new products and features, and analyzing trends that could impact pricing.
  • Valuation: Includes learning how various types of reserves are calculated including active life, disabled life and others.
  • Risk Analysis: Gives participants an opportunity to partner with the Benefits Center to develop risk plans.

Qualifications for the program


  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in math, actuarial science, finance or a related area with a minimum 3.3 GPA
  • Successful completion of at least one actuarial exam and commitment to achieving Fellowship
  • Demonstrated communication, interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Practical experience with a programming language or statistical software
  • Previous analytical work experience in a business setting preferred
